EINE STADT WIRD BUNT.
FLASHBACK – The Chronicle 2016–2026

Release date: May, 7th 2026.
All pre-order customers will receive a free poster of the “Tag Wall” from the exhibition at the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte.

This comprehensive book looks back on ten years filled with ideas, exhibitions, events, and encounters, documenting a success story that began with the first research in 2016 – a FLASHBACK to a decade that turned EINE STADT WIRD BUNT into a cultural beacon.

FLASHBACK documents all facets of the EINE STADT WIRD BUNT project over the past ten years: from the development of the initial idea and the intensive research since 2016, through crowdfunding and the production of the book, to early presentations at festivals, in galleries, and in museums. A special focus is placed on the major exhibition at the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte (2022–2024), including its diverse exhibition views. This is complemented by all content from the interactive app “UNSERE STADT WIRD BUNT”, as well as workshops, lectures, and talks, alongside accompanying publications, events, and numerous actions.

Readers experience a complete retrospective of these years, enriched by interviews with the project initiators, background reports, and previously unpublished visual material from the 1980s.

FLASHBACK makes visible the emergence of a new, vibrant culture of remembrance that has significantly shaped the city of Hamburg over the past decade and inspired many actors in other cities.
