Back then in St. Pauli

Is that the boy Bruce Lee? No, that's Andre Ticoalu, alias "Sonny" , who in 1984 - at the age of 15 - was training breaking moves in a backyard in St. Pauli. It's no coincidence that they are a bit reminiscent of kung fu: "At the time, we lived at Seilerstrasse 27 and shared the backyard with Al Dacascos' studio, among others," says Sonny . And so it came about that he was already training with the kung fu legend at the age of ten.

"I was less interested in the fight than in the movements," says Sonny . When a friend returned from a trip to New York in 1983 and demonstrated a few moves, he was electrified: "I just thought: what is that? I want to do that too!" He started training - and over the years developed his own moves inspired by kung fu. "This special style is the reason why I became so famous so quickly," he says today.
Sonny's whole life soon revolved around hip hop. Under the name "SonnyTee" he soon became one of the best breakers in the country. And under the name "Jase" he made a name for himself as a writer far beyond Hamburg's borders.

Today, Andre Ticualu is a living hip-hop legend, gives graffiti and breaking workshops and is part of the artistic direction of the Hip-Hop Academy Hamburg. The backyard at Seilerstrasse 27 still exists today. But only a few people know that hip-hop history was written here.
